US Soccer grants USL and NASL provisional Division II status for 2017

Moving down, combined with folding teams, meant simply that the league could possibly end up in a state where it couldn't operate or meet standards of a second-tier league, jeopordizing its future. Some USL members fall short in areas such as stadium capacity and field size.

"Demotion would kill the NASL", Straus wrote. The status quo would infuriate the USL. And attempts at some kind of compromise, from the absorption of the healthy NASL clubs into the USL to a D2/D3 split within the USL itself, went nowhere. They want the leagues to meet the full requirements for division two by 2018. Both the NASL and USL will have provisional second-division sanctioning in 2017. That means there will be no third-tier league this year.

On Friday, the U.S. Soccer Federation Board of Governors announced it would keep the North American Soccer League at the Division II level for the upcoming 2017 season but with provisional status.

Meanwhile, Austin will be without a professional soccer team for the second year in a row.

"We've gone directly to the fan base, we opened up a brand new fan shop in the South Soccer Centre and the reason we did that, is that the minor soccer community is one of biggest fan bases", Ball said. The whole point was to ensure stability and sustainability, and the waivers were sparking the opposite.

Now both leagues have 12 months to get it right.

U.S. Soccer's decision appears to just kick the can down the road. The NASL could have as few as eight teams, but the USSF threw it a lifeline because it does not want the older league to die.

NASL owners cautiously optimistic of survival with 'new vision´. "Our teams have invested more than $100 million into stadium development in the a year ago to enhance the experience for the 1.5 million passionate fans that attended games in 2016, the 1,000-plus players and almost 100 coaches that have positioned our League as a highly sophisticated competition model that cultivates strong regional rivalries". There was no word from the club or Commisso Friday evening concerning the status of the transaction.

The questions now.who will own the Armada and where will the team play? The league continues to have discussions with potential expansion cities, including Chicago, Atlanta and San Diego, that could eventually add to the total number.

After an exhaustive process working with both leagues, in the best interest of the sport the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors has made a decision to grant provisional Division II status to the USL.

The Aztex and the USL agreed on a one-year suspension for 2016 after the team lost more than a million dollars in its 2015 debut while renting two high school facilities for its home games.

If the pursuit of a new USA soccer pecking order has elicited a lot of shrugs in the stands, though, it has made for a pitched battle at the suite level.

Frisch issued the following statement on Saturday regarding the future of the club.

U.S. Soccer is now expected to work closely with both leagues throughout the year to establish goals for each league to meet in order to remain in the second division.

The USL regains independent D2 sanctioning for the first time since 2009, albeit on a provisional basis. In 2010, following a schism within the league, U.S. Soccer administered the country's D2 competition.
