Dell Insists Its Canvas 27 Isn't a Microsoft Surface Studio Clone

Dell Canvas

At this year's CES, the Round Rock, the Texas-headquartered company is showcasing a Surface Studio-like device, called the Canvas. While both are aimed at bringing forth the new input capabilities coming to Windows 10 Creators Update later this quarter, the Surface Studio is an all-in-one computer while the Dell Canvas is only a display that connects to any PC running the new operating system. There are a few A/V ports around the edges, but the most important one is the USB Type-C port. That's because, in addition to the 27-inch diagonal measurement of the tablet, the Dell Canvas also features a huge percentage of bezels but that was not included because the manufacturer didn't possess any aesthetic forte when designing products, but it will act as an arm rest for users when they get down to actually using the tablet. The digital pen, which is akin to Microsoft's Dial for the Surface Studio, allows users to sketch and navigate on the screen to quickly access a menu of options.

The Canvas' 2560x1440 display can't quite match the pixel density of the Surface Studio's very impressive 4500x3000 pixel display, but Dell's Totem rotary controller can reportedly do all the same tricks as Microsoft's Surface Dial. Apparently, though the new slab is also made with digital artists in mind, it is more of just a large Wacom tablet than an all-in-one PC.

The display itself doesn't look as sharp as you might expect, so again, this isn't necessarily going to rival the Surface Studio. Instead, it is an interactive touchscreen display, as per TechCrunch. It is also equipped with a set of large bezels created to provide the most comfort for artists as they work, a QHD display with 2560 x 1440 screen resolution, and anti-glare Gorilla Glass. It weighs 18.5 pounds and comes with a Stylus.

The Canvas will be available at a retail price of $1,799 in the USA on March 30, coinciding with the release of Windows 10 Creators Update.
