Microsoft talks plans for 2017; Project Scorpio, Xbox Live updates, and more

Microsoft has released some interesting numbers regarding player engagement across its Xbox brand.

The dev team also confirmed that in November and December they saw Xbox Live engagement reach an all-time high of 3.9 billion hours, up 23 percent compared to the prior year.

While the Playstation 4 line has had the advantage over the Xbox One ever since both consoles launched in 2013, both in terms of sales and graphics (mainly attributed to the Playstation 4 having a better selection of games and having a higher resolution), the Xbox One Scorpio is definitely a big investment by Microsoft.

Xbox One owners enjoyed almost 400 new games to play in 2016, including critically-acclaimed console exclusives like Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3, which would become the highest-rated, best-selling racing game in 2016 - not to mention the biggest Forza launch to date.

Xbox Live was rated the fastest and most reliable gaming network. Microsoft also noted that some of 2016's biggest hits would see expansions introduced as well, including Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3.

It looks like Microsoft is planning on one-upping their own achievements from 2016 in 2017, calling it a "special year for Xbox gamers".

TheXbox Play Anywhere program launched, which enables gamers to play a growing list of titles like Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3, ReCore, Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition, Everspace and Astroneer on Xbox One and on Windows 10 PC at no additional cost.

Since it was revealed that the Xbox One would begin building a library of backwards compatible Xbox 360 titles in June 2015, Microsoft has consistently worked on adding titles to make it a seriously impressive roster.

The Xbox One S released, bringing built-in UHD 4K Blu-ray, 4K video streaming and HDR for gaming and video with it.

The firm also said it is "excited to show more" of what's in store for users this year, and is looking forward to unveiling Project Scorpio "in the coming months".
